College Uniform

Parents, teachers and students work together to ensure that the highest possible standards are maintained in all areas of College life at All Hallows.  A student’s willingness to wear the correct uniform accompanies an attitude to College, which usually maximises success in learning and personal development.  It also indicates a family’s commitment to the values and ethos of the College, which is crucial to the growth and development of our young people.

This policy has been updated in line with statutory guidance. The revisions reflect national expectations set out in the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill, which aims to support families by reducing the cost of school uniforms while maintaining high standards of presentation.

In accordance with this guidance, we have limited the number of compulsory branded uniform items to a maximum of three (plus a tie). We have carefully reviewed our current uniform provision to ensure it meets these requirements while continuing to support students’ wellbeing.

There are several important reasons for having a College uniform

  • It promotes a sense of commitment, pride, and belonging to our College

  • It helps avoid an expensive ‘fashion competition’ between students

  • It encourages students to remain focused on their learning

  • It supports equality across the student body

At All Hallows, parents, carers, teachers, and students work together to uphold the highest standards in all aspects of College life. A student’s willingness to wear the correct uniform reflects a positive attitude towards College, which is often linked to success in both learning and personal development. It also demonstrates a family’s commitment to the College’s values and ethos, which are vital to the growth and development of our young people.

The College works with a local supplier, Classworx, which provides school-specific uniform items. Many other required items can be purchased from a range of high street retailers. In addition, the College maintains a stock of good-quality pre-owned uniform items, generously donated by families.

The uniform, as outlined in this policy, is compulsory for all students, although some choice of items is allowed. The College reserves the right to determine whether an item meets the spirit of the uniform policy.  Our aim is to help students understand that dress codes are an important part of life and that ‘dressing for success’ prepares them for the expectations of adult and working life.

The All Hallows uniform policy is applied consistently.  In the rare event that a student arrives incorrectly dressed, parents will be contacted and asked to bring the appropriate items to College. Alternatively, students may be required to wear clean loaned items, where available. If there is a valid reason why a student is temporarily unable to wear full uniform, parents should contact the relevant Year Learning Leader. In cases of financial difficulty, confidential support and advice are also available through the Year Learning Leader.

Our uniform is not gender-specific. All students may choose from the approved uniform options and are expected to wear them correctly and with pride throughout the day and when travelling to and from College.

We are confident that parents will continue to support the College in maintaining these high standards. Please do not allow your child to persuade you to purchase non-uniform items, as this can lead to unnecessary expense and disappointment. By working together, both at home and in College, we can help our young people develop responsibility, maturity, and respect through clear and consistent expectations.

The Halo Code

Our college champions the right of staff and students to embrace all Afro-hairstyles. We acknowledge that Afro-textured hair is an important part of our Black staff and students’ racial, ethnic, cultural, and religious identities, and requires specific styling for hair health and maintenance.

We welcome Afro-textured hair worn in all styles including, but not limited to, afros, locs, twists, braids, cornrows, hair straightened through the application of heat or chemicals, weaves, wigs, headscarves, and wraps.  We ask that headwear reflects our College uniform and is plain black.

At this college, we recognise and celebrate our staff and students’ identities. We are a community built on an ethos of equality and respect where hair texture and style have no bearing on anyone’s ability to succeed.
